Church of St. Nicholas in Bodružal

Saved miraculously during the battles for the Dukla Pass, this beautiful church deserves a visit. Beautiful polychrome, the unusual layout of the iconostasis and symbolic architecture will remain in your memory for a long time.

The Church of Saint Nicholas is a woodenGreek Catholic church  a branch church, built in 1658 inBodružal , in the area of the Greek CatholicArchieparchy of Prešov . It belongs to the parish ofHunkovce .

The church complex includes the church building, an independent belfry, a cemetery and a wooden fence. It is  a Lemko church of the north-west type. It consists of three rooms - thenave ,presbytery and women's gallery. On the outside, this triple character is accentuated by the varied height of the bulbous, bulbousturrets . It symbolically shows the Holy Trinity.

The northern wall of the nave is decorated with an interesting figural polychrome made in the mid-18th century. scenes of the Crucifixion, the Last Judgment, Christ Pantocrator, Mother of God, angels, apostles, Adam and Eve kneeling at the table with the Gospel open, Archangel Michael judging souls and devils hanging on the gallows of the church guardians. The iconostasis from 1794, which is rare in churches, is asymmetrical is also interesting. The tsarist gates are shifted in relation to the middle icons placed in the higher rows. In addition, the left deacon door is clearly wider than the right one.

During the fights for the Dukla Pass, a missile fell on the roof of the church. Miraculously, the explosion did not happen. The women from the village, regardless of the danger of losing their lives, took the missile from the roof and took it to the soldiers who unlocked it and detonated it away from the temple. However, a memento of this event has remained on the roof of the church to this day.

In 2008, along with otherwooden temples of the Slovak Carpathians, it was entered on theUNESCO World Heritage List .

Near the Greek Catholic church there is the Orthodox church of Saints Peter and Paul
