Kamieniec Castle

The inspiration for writing the comedy "Zemsta" by Aleksander Fredro (the owner of the castle) were court files of the 17th century dispute between the Firlej and Skotnicki families, between which the castle was then divided. The disputed wall still separates the upper and lower wards. The wall also divides the castle between the communes of Wojaszówka and Korczyna. In 2002, Andrzej Wajda used the Kamieniec Castle as a natural scenery for the screening of the most famous Polish comedy.

The gothic structure was built on a rock at an altitude of 452 m above sea level. Its irregular shape was the result of the terrain on which it was erected . During the reign of Casimir the Great, it was a border fortified castle. Currently, this part, of which the ogival portal and the eastern wall with a recess have remained, is called "high" ("higher") or "Odrzykoński".

Its purpose was to defend the trade route from Poland to Hungary through the Dukla Pass. The lower castle ("Korczyński") is the effect of the expansion towards the east from 1448. At the same time, the construction of a rectangular tower and a moat surrounding the entire castle were completed. The rooms in the tower were used as an armory and a prison.

The resulting courtyard, called the Korczyński outer bailey, was separated from the high castle by a border wall. The chapel and the well were common to both parts. The expansion of the castle enriched it with buildings in the Renaissance style.

Currently, the eastern part is better preserved and there is the entrance to the former castle. The remains of residential buildings and a chapel are visible. In this part of the monument, there is a small museum designed by Andrzej Kołder, the enthusiast of the castle and collector. The exhibits include military items from the former castle arsenal and mementoes of subsequent owners, as well as the 14th-century coat of arms from the castle door.

On November 8, 1828, after eleven years of efforts, Count Aleksander Fredro married in the church in Korczyn   the owner of the castle in Odrzykoń , Zofia de domo, Countess Jabłonowska , primo voto   Countess Skarbek and thus became the owner of the castle. The idea of his most famous comedy "Zemsta" was born when Fredro looked through archival documents and came across the court files of a long-standing dispute between Piotr Firlej and Jan Skotnicki in the 17th century, and which was resolved only by the wedding of the castellan Zofia Skotnicka with the voivode Mikołaj Firlejeme Mikołaj .
