Kežmarok Castle

The castle complex of the town type was built to defend the town in 1463 on the ruins of the medieval settlement of Svätá Alžbeta.

In 1931, the first exhibitions of the regional museum were opened in part of the castle complex. After the general renovation of the castle in the years 1962-1985, the museum collections expanded, and now visitors can see several exhibitions, and in summer also theater performances during the night tour of the castle.

Permanent exhibition of the castle:

  • Guilds and craftsmanship - There were 36 separate guilds in Kieżmark (closed craft communities), in the exhibition you will find used work tools, signboards of individual guilds and many others.
  • Town Hall - The room contains parts of the equipment of the former Kieżmark town hall and symbols of the privileges of the city of Kieżmark.
  • Weapons exhibition - We exhibited firearms - crossbows, hooks and pistols, but also various types of white weapons - swords, daggers, and armor.
  • Shooting Association - Exhibition of shooting "brotherhood" in Kieżmark, which was founded in 1510.
  • The Thokoly family - The most famous owner of the castle in Kežmarok was Imrich Thokoly, there is an exhibition devoted to his family in the castle.
  • Pharmacy exposition at the castle in KežmarokLekáreň - An exhibition devoted to the association of doctors and pharmacists from Spiš, equipment and supplies for a pharmacy, which comes from the neighboring village of Lubica from the 19th - 20th centuries. Panorama of the exposure
  • The life and work of Dr. Aleksandra - dr. Vojtech Alexander (1857-1916), who was the first doctor in Slovakia to purchase an X-ray machine and made a significant contribution to the research on the invention of "X" rays.
  • Hunger, the lookout tower - recalls the unfortunate fate of the wealthy castle lady Beata Laska, imprisoned by her husband Albert Lasky. The lookout tower offers a wonderful view of the city and the High Tatras.
  • Kieżmark in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - The exhibition documents the political development in the revolutionary years 1848 - 1849; economic development of the city - the first industrial enterprises in the city; culture, social life and education; history of the development of the Jewish part of the city's population.
  • Gallery - Historical portraits from the works of Spiš painters, from the museum's collection.
  • Castle chapel - a baroque castle chapel, built for Maria Gyulaffy in the years 1657 - 1658. She died at the age of 22 and was buried in the tomb of the castle chapel. It is said that an escape tunnel led from the tomb to the manor house in Strážki.
  • Kieżmark and the High Tatras - The exhibition is devoted to the ties between the Kieżmark people and the Tatra Mountains, the beginnings of mountain tourism, but also the settlement of the region of the Tatra Mountains.
  • Lapidarium - The exhibition displays worked stone products from sacred and secular buildings from various periods, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
