Pogórzanie School from Wydrna

The school building of Pogórzans from Wydrna from the district of Brzozów.

This small, white house with a shingled roof hides a former school building. It was established in 1880, thanks to the efforts of the local population and the court, and served its function until the First World War. It was built by a local rural carpenter from fir half-rounds and, in accordance with the tradition of the Pogórzans, it was entirely whitewashed with lime. Passing the threshold of the school, we will find ourselves in the hall with a wooden clothes hanger. We enter a small, whitewashed classroom directly from the entrance hall. There, on the floor made of clay, there are wooden multi-person benches. In front of them, on the dais, there is a desk and chair for the teacher, a wardrobe for teaching aids, an abacus and a blackboard. On the wall, opposite the entrance from the hall, there is a cross and a portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I (this part of Poland belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy until the end of World War I), and on the next wall - a political map of Europe from the mid-19th century. If you look closely at the beams on the ceiling, you will find a circular rosette carved in wood, the IHS inscription and the sign of the cross. They are traditional decorations that combine religious and pagan signs. Behind the classroom there are two narrow rooms in which the teacher lived. In these small living rooms there was a bread oven and baking trays as well as basic furniture in accordance with the canons of the 19th century.
