Pogórzanie (Pogorzans)

Traditions and customs.

The process of the disappearance of annual and family rituals is one of the manifestations of the leveling of folk culture. Only a few of the forms accepted by the contemporary inhabitants of Pogórze have survived from the former, very rich rituals. Old rituals are presented by numerous ritual-singing groups in this area.

In traditional Pogórze culture, the annual ritual cycle was closely related to the agricultural cycle, farm activities and church holidays. The most important annual rites were those related to Christmas (Christmas Eve customs, caroling) and Easter, midsummer rites, and harvest festival.

The most important family rite, also important from the point of view of the entire community, was the wedding. Local pilgrimage and pilgrimage sites and springs with miraculous water also played an important role.
