Połoniny National Park

Połoniny National Park - a national park in eastern Slovakia was established in 1997. The area of the park is 29,805 ha, and its buffer zone is 10,973 ha.

The park protects mountain pastures in the Slovak part of the Western Bieszczady, known as the Bukowskie Mountains. The Starina dam reservoir covers a little more than 1% of the park's area. The park borders on the Polish Bieszczady National Park and the Ukrainian Użański National Park, forming part of the "Eastern Carpathians" International Biosphere Reserve. The dominant plant communities in the Park are forests, a large part of which are primary forests.

Currently, over 1000 species of higher plants have been found in the territory of the Połoniny National Park. Many of them are rare or endangered species. The floristic diversity of the area is confirmed by the presence of about 300 species of fungi, over 300 species of bryophytes and over 100 species of lichens.

The "Połoniny" National Park is today the only place where a wild population of European bison can be found in Slovakia.

Extremely dark and undisturbed by light, the night sky is a natural part of this easternmost National Park Połoniny. It is a rarity, because in today's world full of artificial night lighting, it is increasingly difficult to find such unique places. And that is why in Połoniny in 2010 a unique Dark Sky Park was created as the first such area in Slovakia.
