Szarisz Castle (Saris)

The Šariš Castle is the ruins of one of the largest castle in Slovakia covering about 4.5 hectares of land. The castle used to be entered through a barbican with a double gate using a drawbridge over the still visible moat

The ruins are located on the summit of Sarisske Vrch, 570 m above sea level, overlooking the town of Veliky Sariš, 8 km northwest of the town of Presov in eastern Slovakia. In the Middle Ages, this castle was of strategic importance as it was possible to control the routes leading from the south of Hungary to Poland and from the west through Spisz and Grays to Ruthenia. in 1262 the castle is mentioned for the first time as castrum Sarus, then it belonged to the royal domain. From the last of the Hungarian royal family of Arpads, the castle received the palotine Amadej Aba and it probably became its headquarters. After numerous adventures, the castle passed into the hands of the mighty Hungarian Perenyi family in 1436. In 1461, after another turmoil, King Maciej Korwin returned the castle to their possession. As a result of the conflict in 1537, the castle owned by Piotr Perényi was conquered by the army of Ferdinand Habsburg, who appointed his adviser and diplomat Jerzy Wernher as its new owner. At that time, the castle obtained the form of a multi-part fortress with numerous towers and a bastion in place of the 14th-century gate. A new ring of walls was erected on the ramparts of the former Slavic settlement. In 1642 the castle was taken over by the Rakoczy family. In 1660, the castle was badly damaged after the explosion of the powder magazine. In 1687, the stronghold was finally abandoned, earlier it was partially blown up and set on fire
