Vihorlat Observatory

The astronomical observatory in the center of Humenne, apart from professional scientific activities, conducts educational classes and night sky observations for students and the wider community.

The observatory was founded in 1952 and in over 65 years of operation it has become an important center for astronomy education, promotion and observation in the Horní Zemplín region.

The activity of the observatory is based on three pillars - professional observation, popularization, education.

Professional activity takes place mainly at the Astronomical Observatory on the Kolonický Pass and focuses on the observation of different types of variable stars. Thanks to the location in the Poloniny Dark Sky Park, astrophysicists have ideal working conditions.

In the Humerian observatory, popularization and educational programs for schools and the wider community are carried out, classes are held both in Humenne and in the facility in Kolonicki Sedlo near Ladomirov. At the Humen Observatory, classes are held in a room for 77 students, and in the dome, you can observe the solar photosphere using the projection method.

In the planetarium on the Kolonice Sedlo Pass, you can display an artificial night sky, conduct a lecture or watch educational films. And if the weather permits, after dark, the telescope is ready for the ordered guests to observe objects of the night sky.
