Bardejov Baths - Bardejów Zdrój

Bardejov-Zdrój (Slovak: Bardejovské Kúpele) - a spa in Slovakia, in the Bardejov district of the Prešov Region, is part of the city of Bardejov and is located a few kilometers north of its center. It is situated at the foot of the Magura massif.

The first mention of Bardejov springs comes from 1247. From 1505 we have information that fees were charged for bathing in the springs, which may indicate that some bathing facilities already existed there at that time. At the end of the 17th century, the city built an inn at the springs. In the next century, the spa already had bathing bathrooms with metal tubs and was visited almost all year round. The most frequent guests - apart from Bardejov burghers - were Polish and Hungarian nobility.

The health resort was famous for the visits of high-born guests, such as Prince Adam Czartoryski and Count Ignacy Potocki. In 1783, the Austrian Emperor Joseph II stayed there. In 1809, the daughter of the Austrian Emperor Francis II, Maria Ludwika, who later became the second wife of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, was treated here. In 1821, Russian Tsar Alexander I stayed here for treatment.

In July 1895, Elżbieta Bawarska, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph, also stayed here for 3 weeks. She was very pleased with her stay and treatment: out of gratitude, she offered the local parish priest a ring, which is still on display in the town hall. Her stay is commemorated in 1903 (5 years after Elizabeth's death) with a bronze statue of the Empress in front of the Alžbeta healing house.

Currently, the health resort has a total of 10 mineral water springs, used in the balneological and therapeutic complex and in the public mineral water pump room. Mainly diseases of the digestive tract and metabolism are treated here.
