Caraff Prison

The building of Caraffowa Vaznica is one of the few remaining gothic monuments within the city of Prešov, which was built in the years 1504 - 1509.

Originally, this building served as a winery and as a warehouse for barrels and other accessories for the production and sale of wine, probably until the end of the 17th century. In archival documents from 1530, he is also mentioned as one of the prisons in Prešov due to the proximity of the town hall. It was named after the bloody slaughter in Prešov in 1687, when 24 Hungarian peasants and townspeople died on the basis of the unfair imperial court of General Antonio Caraff of Naples. In the second half of the 19th century, it housed a municipal prison. From the beginning of the 20th century. the building began to be used for archiving municipal documents. Currently, it serves as a city gallery.

Since the reconstruction that the Carrafa prison has undergone, visitors can enjoy the permanent exhibition of opals and solivar lace - unique phenomena of the Sharia region, the historical center of which was the city of Presov. Temporary exhibitions are also organized in the gallery.
