District Museum in Nowy Sącz.

The District Museum in Nowy Sącz is today a powerful cultural institution, managing 5 branches in Nowy Sącz: the Main Building, the Gothic House, Maria Ritter Gallery, the Sądecki Ethnographic Park and the Galician Town, and 3 local branches: the Nikifor Museum in Krynica Zdrój, the Pieniny Museum in Szlachtowa and Museum of Lachów Sądeckich in Podegrodzie.

The beginnings of museology in Nowy Sącz date back to the turn of the 1880s and 90s of the 19th century, when relics of the past began to be collected. The first exhibitions were organized, among others in the Nowy Sącz town hall. Despite subsequent resolutions (1909, 1910), the idea of establishing the museum was not resumed until the end of World War I. Ultimately, there was an opportunity to open not only a museum but also a library. And so the final collections were made available on August 12, 1938. The following year the collections were placed in private hands to protect them against theft during the German occupation. In 1945, an explosion of an ammunition depot caused the destruction of the museum along with other museum pieces.

After the war, only some of the exhibits were recovered. The enlargement of the modest collection resulted in the transfer of relics of orthodox art from the Western Lemko region.

For the purpose of storing and displaying, the "Gothic House" was designated as the seat of the building.

Since 1975, when the Nowosądeckie Voivodeship was established, the facility functioned and functions to this day as the District Museum in Nowy Sącz.

In the following years, through the creation of new departments, the museum's activities were significantly expanded. The list of new branches includes:

  • Sądecki Ethnographic Park (1975)
  • Maria Ritter Gallery and Stare Mieszczańskie Interiors (1979)
  • Museum of Lachów Sądeckich im. Zofia and Stanisław Chrząstowski (1981)
  • Pieniny Museum for them. Józef Szalay (1982)
  • Former Synagogue Gallery (in the museum structure until 2015)
  • Nikifor Museum (1995)

In addition, in the neighborhood there is an open-air museum, Miasteczko Galicyjskie, which is a reconstruction of a fragment of small-town buildings.

The permanent exhibition includes:

  • guild art from the Sącz region from the 14th century,
  • overview exhibition: The Royal Castle in Nowy Sącz,
  • gallery of portraits of the mayors of Nowy Sącz from 1870 to 1914,
  • old folk art from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century,
  • orthodox art.

In addition, 3 halls for variable exhibitions and a concert and lecture hall.
