Havešová Primeval Forest (UNESCO)

In June 2007, the area of the Carpathian beech forests in Slovakia and Ukraine was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In Slovakia, this list includes, among others, the Haweszowa Puszcza Bukowa, which is located in the Bukowskie Mountains included in the area of the Połoniny National Park.

The ancient and primeval beech forests of the Carpathians are an international common good. They are an exceptional example of relatively well-preserved temperate beech forests. They are exemplary in terms of the ecological processes taking place in them, especially in solid and mixed stands of European beech (Fagus sylvatica). We can observe these ecological processes under various environmental conditions. The protected areas have been documented by scientists using the latest genetic coding techniques.

These forests contain an invaluable population of old trees and a genetic reservoir of beech and many other species that are associated with the habitats of old trees.
