Museum of Jewish Culture - Synagogue in Prešov

The only currently active synagogue in Prešov. Its interior, on the upper floor, houses the museum of Jewish culture (Slovak: Židovské múzeum Prešov).

The synagogue in Prešov was built in 1897-1898. From the outside, the building has smooth facades, separated by slender windows. The interior is impressive, decorated with rich oriental-style murals. On the eastern side, there is an ark for the storage of Torah scrolls. In the middle there is a platform with a prayer table for reading the Torah. In the Jewish community of Prešov, visitors can see not only the synagogue itself, but also the permanent exhibition of Bárkány's Judaica collection, which is located on the first floor and administratively belongs to the Slovak National Museum, Branch of Jewish Culture in Bratislava. The collection also includes period items from the original Jewish Museum, which was founded in Prešov in 1928.

In August 1991, a monument dedicated to the memory of over 6,000 people was unveiled in the yard in front of the synagogue, in the presence of representatives of the highest state authorities of Slovakia. Holocaust victims from Prešov and the surrounding area.

In November 1993, on the first floor (a gallery originally intended for women) of the carefully restored synagogue, the Slovak National Museum installed an exhibition consisting of some exhibits from the pre-war Jewish museum, the so-called Bárkány's collection.
