The open-air museum presents the traditional folk culture of the Gorlice Foothills, a group closely related to the entire Carpathian Foothills. There are 15 facilities in the area of approx. 2 ha.

The open-air museum is located in the center of Szymbark near Gorlice, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is situated near the school and the parish church, on the Nowy Sącz - Gorlice route.

In 1962, Jerzy Tur - the provincial conservator of monuments in Rzeszów, took the initiative to organize a small open-air museum in Szymbark. The open-air museum was to present the rural architecture of Pogórzans from the vicinity of Gorlice. The final version of the "Concept for the spatial development of the Folk Architecture Center in Szymbark" was prepared by: Ryszard Brykowski and Wojciech Jankowski. Roman Reinfuss, a Polish ethnographer and researcher of folk art in the Pogórzans, was the consultant during the organization of the Szymbark open-air museum. The limited area of the open-air museum determined the park development, without recreating the authentic arrangement of individual objects.

The open-air museum in Szymbark also conducts cultural and educational activities, including exhibitions, lessons and museum workshops, educational programs, organization of outdoor events in order to present the cultural heritage of the region in the most authentic way. The open-air museum organizes folklore events presenting old crafts, handicrafts, traditional economic activities, annual and family rituals, music, singing, and dancing not only of Pogórzans, but also of other ethnographic and ethnic groups. The activities are complemented by temporary exhibitions presenting, among others handicraft, craftsmanship of local folk artists, folk costumes of the Polish-Slovak border and many other areas of folk culture.
