Orthodox church of St. Michael the Archangel in Smolnik

The church in Smolnik was built in the Boyko type. It is the only preserved sacred building of this type in the Bieszczady Mountains and one of three in the whole country.

St. Michael the Archangel in Smolnik was built in 1791 in the place of the previous temple, which was burnt in 1672. Originally it was an Orthodox church, then a Greek Catholic church in Smolnik, and from 1974 a Roman Catholic branch church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the parish of St. Stanisław Bishop in Lutowiska. In 1969, the church in Smolnik was entered in the Register of Monuments. Thanks to this status, renovation works were started, which allowed to restore the original architectural form of the church.

The church in Smolnik was built in the Boyko type. It is the only preserved sacred building of this type in the Bieszczady Mountains and one of three in the whole country.

The temple is three-part, with a nave, presbytery and vestibule of equal height, but unequal width - the nave is wider. All parts of the building are crowned with cupolas with crosses on top of the tented roofs.

Inside the church, the icon of the Assumption of the Mother of God from 1748 and a figural wall polychrome from the end of the 18th century have been preserved.

In 2013, the church in Smolnik was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is located on the Subcarpathian Wooden Architecture Trail.
