Orthodox church of the Protection of the Mother of God on the holy Góra Jawor

The temple and the worshipful spring are the destination of many pilgrimages both from Poland and Slovakia . Mount Jawor is considered holy by Orthodox believers due to the Marian apparitions that took place there in the interwar period .

The beginnings of the sanctuary date back to the 1920s and are related to the Marian apparitions that were first experienced on September 21, 1925 by one of the inhabitants of Wysowa . The news of repeated apparitions in the clearing under Mount Jawor quickly became known in the entire area and attracted more and more pilgrims. Therefore, the Greek Catholic bishop from Przemyśl (despite the initially reluctant position) ordered a church to be built in the place of the apparitions.

After the war, as a result of the displacement of the local Lemko people as part of the Operation "Vistula" (1947), the deserted temple was taken over by the Border Protection Army . A watchtower was arranged in the building of the church , and the interior fittings were burnt (only one icon was saved). From 1956, ie from the beginning of the return of the Lemkos to their patrimony, efforts were made to regain the temple, but it did not take place until 1969. The church was renovated and re-equipped, with the considerable help of the Lemkos from the USA . The temple became part of the parish of St. Michael the Archangel in Wysowa-Zdrój ( Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church ).

After many years of court disputes, the church was finally awarded to Greek Catholics (2017). Since then, Orthodox Christians have been celebrating services at the field altar, situated on a nearby plot of land owned by the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church (an Orthodox church is planned to be built there).
