Roman Catholic Church of St. Giles

St. Idzi in Bardejów (Slovak: Bazilika svätého Egídia) - a sacred building initially serving as a Catholic parish church, built in the Gothic style. It was established at the beginning of the 13th century, simultaneously with the Cistercian monastery in Bardejów, which was being built at the same time. It is located in the northern part of the Town Hall Square in Bardejov. Since 1970, it has been included in the list of national cultural monuments in Slovakia. In 2000, Pope John Paul II elevated the temple to the rank of a minor basilica.

The basilica is the second oldest church in the Kosice Archdiocese. The first written record of the existence of the church of St. Idzi dates from 1247. The construction of the present basilica was probably started in the 14th century.

St. Idzi is a three-nave Gothic basilica with a polygonal presbytery, sacristy, two chapels and a tower. The basilica is 50 meters long and 31 meters wide, and the nave is 24 meters high. The six-story 76-meter-high tower is one of the tallest towers in Slovakia. There is a belfry on the fourth floor of the tower and an observation deck on the sixth floor. Two bells that had rang from the church tower until 1990 - "Jan" and "Urban" were replaced with new ones in 1995, the third - "Signum" was made in 1625.

The basilica can seat about 3,000 people and has 500 seats.

To this day, only fragments of frescoes on the southern walls of the first floor of the temple tower have survived, depicting the three kings of Hungary and St. Christopher. These frescoes were made in 1521 by master Jan Kraus. A bronze baptismal font, made in the first half of the 15th century, has been preserved to this day, and in the 17th century it was equipped with a copper plate cladding with biblical quotations written on it and side altars from the 15th and 16th centuries. There are eleven of them.

The most valuable objects in the temple are well-preserved gothic altars.
