Sanctuary of Our Lady of Starowiejska in Stara Wieś

Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - a late baroque temple in Stara Wieś. The temple was built in the years 1730-1760, consecrated in 1760 by the Przemyśl bishop, Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski. The builders of the temple and the adjacent monastery were the Pauline Fathers. Currently, she is looked after by the Jesuits, who had their novitiate in the Old Town convent until 2016.

There is a museum in the monastery, where collections of sacred art and artistic crafts from the 16th-20th centuries are presented.

In the main altar of the basilica there is a copy of the miraculous painting depicting the scene of the Dormition and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, crowned on September 8, 1877 by Archbishop Lodovico Jacobini, Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna, later Cardinal.

There is a crowned miraculous painting of the Dormition and Assumption of the Mother of God from the first half of the 16th century. The museum's collection includes a hundred nativity scenes from all continents. The oldest of them are over a hundred years old.

On December 6, 1986, an unknown perpetrator set fire to a miraculous painting. Maria Niedzielska undertook to recreate the work. The copy of the painting was officially crowned on September 10, 1972, by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.

In addition to the miraculous image, visitors are attracted by the remarkable architecture of the basilica.

The temple is made of brick, plastered in a shade of sand, appropriate for its period of construction. Its majestic appearance is given by two symmetrical towers, raised by one storey in the mid-nineteenth century. They are crowned with copper helmets inspired by the tops of the towers of the church of St. Anna in Krakow, which owe their present shape to Stanisław Krzyżanowski. The reason for the reconstruction was the fire of the temple in 1886. The facade of the Old Town church reflects the late Baroque fashion. It is intersected vertically by delicately outlined pilasters, thus separating three portals, topped with superstructures, leading to the interior of the temple and constituting an effective finishing of the edges of the towers. On the other hand, its horizontal expression is given by prominent cornices separating the main nave from the towers. There are white glass windows above the portals. Through them, in the evenings, the temple is flooded with the light of the setting sun. The basilica is an extremely quiet place, and a stay in it makes you reflect.

Since 1927, the church has the status of a minor basilica.
