The famous Slovak opal mines are situated in the territory of the Slanske Vrchy mountains between the villages of Zlatá Baňa and Červenica. Slovak opals are highly valued on world markets due to their specific properties. They are unique in terms of the perfect play of colors, i.e. iridescence.

Opal mines experienced their golden times in the years 1845 - 1880, when the lessee of the mine was the Viennese jeweler Solomon Goldschmidt and his descendants after him. The Goldschmidt family managed to export the obtained opals to world markets and secure them world fame.

The largest opal in the world is the opal named Harlekýn, which was found in 1775 in the bed of the Oľšavka stream. It measures 13 cm and weighs 594 g (2,970 carats). It belongs to the valuable exhibits of the natural museum in Vienna, where it is displayed in an armored window. Its price is estimated at half a million USD.

The Burning of Troy opal, which is part of the French Crown Treasury, is also legendary.

For example, the portal of the Józef adit and several side entrances to the underground have been preserved to this day. The forest road leads to the portal of the Viliam adit, where on January 15, 1889 an opal nest was discovered, which was called the Gizela Chapel. The nest gave out an incredible 200 kg of precious precious stones.
