Starina

Starina - an artificial water reservoir in eastern Slovakia, within the Połoniny National Park. The reservoir, apart from regulating the water conditions, serves as a drinking water reservoir for Prešov and Košice and is therefore excluded from tourist activities.

The area of the reservoir - 3.11 km, maximum depth - 46 m, volume - 59.8 million m³. Dam height - 50 m.

The reservoir was built in the years 1983–1988 after the Cirocha river was cut off by an earth dam, situated on the 35th kilometer of its course, near the village of Jalová. The village of Starina was flooded with the waters of the reservoir, and the villages of Zvala, Ostorožnica, Smolník, Veľka Poľana, Ruské and Dara, lying on the tributaries of the Cirocha, were also displaced.

The purpose of the construction of the dam and the reservoir was to provide drinking water resources for the cities of eastern Slovakia, in particular for Prešov and Košice, to reduce flood flows in the river valley below the dam and to ensure minimum flows in this section during dry periods. Due to its function (drinking water retention), the tank is surrounded by two hygienic protection zones. Zone I includes the basin of the reservoir with a 100 m wide strip around its shores (527 ha in total). Admission to it is prohibited. Zone II (12,045 ha excluding zone I) covers practically the entire Cirocha basin above the dam. Including cars are not allowed to enter. The reservoir is excluded from all forms of public use (bathing, water sports, fishing, etc.). The slopes above the banks are covered with forest, especially from the side of road 558. Above this road, slightly above the dam, a gazebo-observation point was built with a view of the lagoon.
