The manor house in Stropków and the Pieta chapel

In the heart of Stropkov, near the town square, there are the proud remains of the Stropkov castle, which was hosted in its walls, among others the Habsburg heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand D'Este. Right next to it, there is a beautiful wooden chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (Pieta).

Modre Pole Castle in Stropków was first mentioned on July 10, 1408. Initially, the owners of the stronghold were the Cudar family, and then the Hungarian noble family of Perenyi and Petho de Gerse. The form of the castle, preserved to this day, is part of his plan from 1767, when the estates of the town of Stropkova and private chateau plots were divided. Originally, the castle had a pentagonal shape, and its parts were the church and the castle that we can see today. On July 15, 1814, a huge fire broke out in the blacksmith's workshop of a certain Temder, which turned the castle and the whole city into fire. For the purposes of rebuilding the city, the castle walls were gradually demolished, and the no longer needed defensive moats were filled in. An important event in the history of the Stropkov castle was the visit of the Austrian successor to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand D'Este, who visited its gates from September 12 to 16, 1911 on the occasion of the Great Imperial War maneuvers. In 1963, the castle was included in the National Cultural Monument. The castle is a local branch of the Regional Museum of Culture in Prešov.

The wooden Pieta chapel standing near the castle is a valuable document of small religious architecture in eastern Slovakia at the end of the 18th century. It is an important landscape factor and appropriately complements the square around the Roman Catholic church. Inside is the Pieta (Our Lady of the Sorrows of the Seven), a folk sculpture from the end of the 18th century.
