Zemplin

Mutual respect and religious tolerance

In terms of religion, Zemplín, like Šariš, can be divided into the Catholic West and the Orthodox East. Ruthenians were followers of the Greek Catholic or Orthodox Church. Hungarians adhere to the Christian Reformed Church, i.e. Calvinists. The Evangelical population (descendants of German settlers from the Rhine and Moselle rivers) concentrated mainly in the vicinity of Vranov nad Topľou. There were numerous Jewish religious communities in the villages of Kráľovské Chlmec, Sirník and Sečovce. However, it should be remembered that the inhabitants of Zemplín lived at the crossroads of different cultural systems. Therefore, ethnically and religiously mixed marriages were a very common phenomenon, therefore it is not always possible to clearly identify an ethnic group with a specific religion.
