Zamagurie

Religion

Among the religions of Zamagurie, Roman Catholicism was the most popular - especially in the southern and central part of the region. Levoča and Kežmarok were important evangelical cultural centers. To this day, Mariańska Mountain in Lewoczy is the place of the most important national Marian pilgrimages. Judaism was also strongly represented in the Zamagurie region until the Second World War. Ruthenians who belonged to the Greek Catholic and Orthodox churches lived in the north of the country. Their highlander neighbors, on the other hand, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.
