Zamagurie

Territory

Zamagurie, already in the Middle Ages, was inhabited by various ethnic groups: Slovaks, Germans, Hungarians, Walloons, Poles and Ruthenians. All these groups lived side by side, assimilated, permeated and complemented each other, creating a colorful national mosaic. This multi-ethnicity, the foundations of which were laid in the Middle Ages, has become a hallmark of this region until the present day. Zamagurie is a region in the North of Spisz (Horny Spis), bordering to the south and east with Magura Spiska and the Dunajec rivers in the north and Białka in the west (today's Poland). Zamagurie is part of the Prešov Region in Slovakia and the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland. The territory borders on Šariš in the southeast, the Tatras in the southwest and Poland in the north. In terms of physiography, Zamagurie is the area of Spišská Magura and the Pieniny Mountains (Polish: Spisko-Gubałowskie Foothills and Małe Pieniny). In various historical periods it was part of Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Zamagurie itself has over 8,000 inhabitants in 17 towns.
