Saris (Slovak: Šariš, Polish: Szarysz)

The richness of faiths

This region was not homogeneous in terms of religion. The population of Šariš was a colorful mosaic of various religions. Ruthenians who lived there were Christians of the Greek Catholic and Orthodox church, the Slavs belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, the Hungarians were Lutherans, and the Germans were Evangelicals. There were also Jewish enclaves professing Judaism in the cities. According to the 1900 census, the area of Šariš was inhabited by the following religious communities:

  • Roman Catholic - 53.8%,

  • Greek Catholics: 30.6%,

  • Lutherans: 8.3%,

  • Jews: 7.0%,

  • Calvinists: 0.3%.
