Pogórzanie (Pogorzans)

The main element distinguishing the Pogórzans from the neighboring ethnographic groups was the folk costume. The folk costume of the Pogórzans, especially the male dress in the Eastern Pogórzans, began to disappear at the end of the 19th century - it was related to the economic development of the region resulting from the discovery of crude oil. The longest female folk costume has survived in Haczów and its vicinity (Pogórzanie Wschodni). The Haczowski attire was characterized by thick white flat embroidery and English embroidery with floral ornaments. This embroidery appeared on tulle scarves being the headgear of married women, on the cuffs and ruffles of the shirt, on the lower part of the skirt and on the sides of the apron. The male attire of the Western Pogórzans was characterized by a blue vest, a white linen cloth and a cuvette, which had an archaic cut of an elongated poncho with a large rectangular collar falling down the back, which served as a hood in case of inclement weather. Cuvas were usually sewn from homespun white cloth. During their performances, folk bands and bands from Pogórze put on stylized folk costumes. The so-called a representative Krosno costume, which was developed about 35 years ago for the needs of the Folk Dance Group "Pogórzanie" from Głowienka . Bands from the vicinity of Dynów put on Rzeszów costumes - it is related to the close proximity to Rzeszowiacy, whose culture had an impact on the villages of this area in Pogórze.

Pogórze costumes are in the collections of museums:

  • Ethnographic Museum Franciszek Kotula in Rzeszów (there is a permanent exhibition on folk costumes entitled "Everyday and on holidays");
  • Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok (permanent exhibition "What to wear ... Huńka, linen cloth, apron");
  • Regional Museum in Jasło (traditional folk costumes from Pogórze are presented in the ethnographic room).

The Pogórze costumes are also in the collections of Stanisław Witkoś, which are stored in the warehouse at the Maria Konopnicka Museum in Żarnowiec. In addition, individual examples of folk costume or its elements are found in local regional chambers.
