Pogórzanie (Pogorzans)

Territory

Pogórzanie is a large ethnographic group living in a subregion called Pogórze. Pogórzanie inhabit the area lying in the Carpathian Foothills - a wavy land between the San and the Dunajec, cut by the valleys of the Wisłok, Wisłoka and Biała rivers.

Due to the existence of historical differences, a different style of houses, interior design, clothing and economy, Pogórzans are divided into Eastern and Western, and the conventional boundary between them lies in the area of the Jasiołka and Wisłok rivers (i.e. on the historical border between Ruthenia and Poland).

The Eastern Foothills inhabit the Strzyżowskie Foothills, the Dynowskie Foothills and a part of the Jasielsko-Sanocki Doły - these are in the vicinity of Brzozów, Dynów and Krosno.

The West Foothills live in the Ciężkowice Foothills, the Strzyżowskie Foothills and the Jasielskie Foothills.
